Dekotora (デコトラ) is short for "decoration truck": Japan's tradition of transforming working freight trucks into rolling art — stainless steel, murals, and above all, light. If you have ever seen a photograph of a Japanese truck wearing hundreds of lamps and a hand-polished stainless bumper the size of a door, you have seen dekotora.

The anatomy of an art truck

A dekotora build is layered from a consistent vocabulary:

  • Lighting — marker lamps tracing the truck's outline, illuminated name plates (andon), and the rear combination tail lamps that have become the signature piece of a modern build.
  • Stainless steel — hand-formed and polished bumpers, side panels, mirror stays and visors.
  • Paint and murals — from classical Japanese imagery to airbrushed landscapes across the cargo box.
  • The cab interior — chandeliers, upholstery, and dashboards finished like a lounge.

Styles vary by region and era. Retro builds lean on filament bulbs and painted steel; modern builds lean on LEDs and restraint. The grammar is shared.

Check the intended installation

A display build does not establish the suitability of a lighting installation for road use. Check the exact product, mounting arrangement and intended use with the installer. OIRAN itself notes that mounting position and quantity can affect suitability. Manufacturer installation notes.

Light became the language

Autofriend’s official company history records the release of OIRAN LED truck tail lamps in May 2010. Autofriend company history.

Our tail lamps carry names drawn from the same cultural well as the murals — HOMURA (焔, "flame"), ARASHI (嵐, "storm"), KATANA (刀) — a bit of brand storytelling we are happy to own. Check the specifications and installation requirements for the exact lamp reference.

Dekotora beyond Japan

Interest in decorated trucks is now international. European truck culture has its own show-truck tradition, and the two scenes are discovering each other at festivals and online. The idea travels well: take a working vehicle, and make it unmistakably yours.
